Norton Disk Doctor and the other components of the Norton Utilities package adapt nicely to an individual user's abilities. ![]() ![]() A better solution is to run a disk-repair program every week or so, to make sure your data remains intact and files aren't disappearing. Corrupt files will be backed up along with the rest of your data (You do backup, don't you?), but you won't know which backup contains the last good copy of your important file. Often, this happens if your Mac crashes while writing to the disk. Since you don't access every file on your hard disk every day, files can become corrupt without your knowledge. Many times, you won't notice them until they get very serious. Some problems occur during normal computer use, causing crashes or disk errors. Norton Utilities' only competition has been Apple's marginally-useful Disk First Aid (which ships with every copy of Mac OS) and the new DiskEssentials utility (which hasn't been around long enough for anyone to swear by yet). You might search for "bad sector repair" on some of the main software sites like, ,, and (on Major Geeks you might just go through all of their Drive Utilities).Norton Utilities is a suite of eleven different utilities for maintaining, repairing, and giving information about your disks. It's not a very good looking program, but it is actually very nice.įloppies are pretty much the same, although those utils can at least allow you to get your data off of them. Unfortunately I don't think there's a download, you just have to get it at a store that sells software, like OfficeDepot. just keep an eye on the overview screen).įix-It Utilities will do everything you want in one package, but it's not free. I also like HDD Health for real-time monitoring of hard drives, it will alert you when they're about to die by reporting the drive's internal diagnostic info (although HDD Health will also report positive gains, so don't panic on every alert. so you're much better off just replacing the drive. If you have a harddrive that's dropping sectors, the chances are it will continue to do so. If that starts happening, it's a good idea to try to figure out what the problem is, why it happened, and at least format, if not replace the harddrive. It won't do repairs, but the thing is that when you start getting file system corruption it's going to be very difficult to fix it completely. Here's a good bunch of freeware hard drive utilities.įor "fixing" bad floppies, here's a couple. ![]()

Attitudinal and Outlaw, it’s one of those country songs that puffs its chest out, proclaims what is and isn’t country, and generally speaking, is the style of country protest song that has grown a bit tired and trite over the years. The title track to this seven-song album is just about what you would expect from a guy named Waylon. He’s a self-taught musician inspired by the Outlaws of country music like Waylon, Billy Joe Shaver, and Johnny Paycheck, and he’s looking to help continue that lineage into the future on his second EP-length album, New Old Outlaws. And whether the name “Waylon” was truly pegged to him at birth or adopted in homage to The Hoss, it’s the music that should speak for Michigan-native Waylon Hanel, not the name. Ultimately though, what’s in a name? It probably got you to pay attention. ![]() There’s Waylon Payne, but when your mother’s Sammi Smith and your father’s Jody Payne, you can pull it off. ![]() Waylon Jennings named his own son Waylon, and even he goes by Shooter. “It takes a lot of guts to make country music with the name Waylon.” There are quite a few Hanks in country music, multiple legends named Johnny, and even a couple of Merles. As the shock of climate crisis hits more people, more of us should gather with neighbors and other affinity groups to learn more and envision better. It must undo the economic, political and social forces that put front-line populations, primarily the elderly, disabled, and Black and brown residents, at most risk of climate impacts and create alternatives that regenerate communities and ecosystems. But, either way, it must bend toward justice. Some will take climate writer and podcaster Mary Annaïse Heglar’s advice to “do what you’re good at, and do your best” for the planet.Īll this talk needs to turn into action, whether at the polls or the pipeline. Some will turn to nonviolent civil disobedience, inspired by Indigenous land and water protectors’ recent pipeline blockades and the history of Black activists forcing change through sit-ins. Some will march outside state capitols when legislators debate bills that promote the fossil fuel industry and punish those who don’t. Some will start community conversations that identify local impacts and devise community-led adaptation and mitigation measures that benefit all. No one action is a silver bullet and no one action fits all lives, but there’s a menu from which to choose. ![]() It has real problems such as opening up oil and gas leases in the Gulf and Arctic where climate impacts are already devastating, but it shows that we and our representatives can vote with both our money and climate action top of mind.Īll the climate talk this summer should also amount to actions beyond voting. We need to elect those who see the synergies.įor example, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, signed by President Joe Biden, creates jobs and reduces pollution that harms health and consequently the economy. ![]() As economists and entrepreneurs have explained, “decarbonizing” the economy - that is, transitioning to renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by other means - generates jobs and spurs innovation while reducing damages to the economy from disasters in the long term. Many Republicans and some Democrats will sideline climate action in favor of economic stabilization and development. With inflation and recession worries understandably polling as Americans’ top concerns, climate crisis risks slipping out of mind in November when 100-degree temperatures, hurricanes and wildfires, possibly, abate. When we choose party candidates at voting time, we need to learn our officials’ priorities and whether they’ll stick to them. Kyrsten Sinema, his Democratic comrade in obstructionism, have taught us, party affiliation does not dictate a politician’s votes. But this exasperated response misses the point: Now is the time to listen, to fuel the conversation, to galvanize that intimate public that feels the stakes of climate crisis and wants to get out of impasses. “Where have you been?! So many have been talking about this for so long” is what I think to myself. My cranky tendency has been to roll my eyes on the phone with these friends and family. I’ve written about and taught environmental issues for over 10 years. ![]() People are feeling something, they’re curious, they “sense that matters of survival are at stake” and that listening and telling are routes “out of the impasse and the struggle of the present.” They are talking. Finally, more Americans who have been sheltered from the earliest and worst climate impacts have formed what Lauren Berlant calls an “intimate public” around climate crisis. But it means one thing to me: the climate crisis is now a public feeling. 1 turned climate savior.Īll this is casual but concerned talk.
